A 34-year old unemployed man, Chris Chong Min Chyen, was sentenced to a total of 27 months’ imprisonment, three strokes of the cane and a $2,800 fine. He was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 12 months.

- He pleaded guilty to offences involving causing grievous hurt, drink driving, criminal intimidation and disorderly behaviour. Four other charges were taken into consideration for the purpose of sentencing.

In mitigation, Chong’s criminal defence lawyer requested for his sentence to be deferred to a later date so that he would be able to celebrate Chinese New Year.
