27 Months’ Imprisonment for Causing Grievous Hurt and Multiple Offences

A 34-year old unemployed man, Chris Chong Min Chyen, was sentenced to a total of 27 months’ imprisonment, three strokes of the cane and a $2,800 fine. He was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 12 months.

Here are some brief, available facts on the case:

• He pleaded guilty to offences involving causing grievous hurt, drink driving, criminal intimidation and disorderly behaviour. Four other charges were taken into consideration for the purpose of sentencing.
• For the incident involving causing grievous hurt, Chong was drunk and punched a man after mistaking him for another person. The incident took place at Club Gaga in Tanglin Shopping Centre.The attack was unprovoked. The victim suffered swelling, double vision and multiple fractures and needed operations on a blowout fracture of his left eye. The victim was hospitalised for a month and incurred medical expenses exceeding $10,000.

In separate incidents, Chong had also driven his car while over the

• limit at a carpark at Block 139, Tampines Street 11. He also punched a female facial therapist in the eye and threatened the owner of a spa by saying he would burn down the shop.

In mitigation, Chong’s criminal defence lawyer requested for his sentence to be deferred to a later date so that he would be able to celebrate Chinese New Year.
