A 33-year old SAF Detention Barracks detainee, Castelli Lee Chun Seng, was sentenced to 4 weeks’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to a charge of giving a $50 bribe to the a full-time National Serviceman medic in exchange for use of his mobile phone in his detention cell.
Two additional charges were taken into consideration for the purpose of sentencing.
Lee bribed the medic after finding out from his cell-mate that the medic had previously allowed other detainees to use their mobile phones in exchange for payment o $50 even though the use of mobile phones by detainees in their cells was prohibited.
After agreeing to the proposal, the medic passed his mobile phone to Lee through the metal grilles of his cell before collecting it later. Lee also arranged for the money to be transferred to the medic’s bank account.
Lee’s criminal defence lawyer emphasised in Court that Lee was remorseful and keen to move on after this case.
Lee had previous convictions for offences including unlicensed moneylending, cheating, causing hurt and disorderly behavior.
